Pee Dee Coalition is a nonprofit volunteer organization that educates the community about interpersonal violence and provides services to victims of sexual assault, domestic violence, and child abuse.
Pee Dee Coalition was organized in 1986 and has expanded into seven Pee Dee counties including Florence, Darlington, Marion, Chesterfield, Marlboro, Dillon, and Williamsburg. Satellite Centers are located in each of these counties where services are available 24 hours a day.
The Coalition provides the following services:
- Community Victim Assistance -- 24 hour crisis line, crisis counseling, and medical, legal and criminal justice advocacy and accompaniment.
- Emergency Safe Shelter -- a confidentially located facility for abused women and their children; 24 access; advocacy; living skills groups; individual and support group counseling; and resource procurement assistance.
- New Beginnings Transitional Shelter -- a transitional shelter where formerly abused women who are homeless as a result of domestic violence may reside for up to 18 months while they develop the skills and resources they need to be self-sufficient.
- Durant Children's Center -- "The House Where Healing Begins" with locations in Florence and Hartsville, the Durant Center provides multidisciplinary assessment and treatment for children and youth suspected of having been physically or sexually abused. Services include medical exam and treatment, clinical forensic interview, individual and group therapy, family advocacy, and court preparation. The Durant Center also provides Parent Education Parent Support groups throughout the region as well as classroom presentations on "Talking About Touching" for preschool and elementary-age children.
- Alternatives to Violence -- an offender intervention program for the reduction of relationship violence. Participation in 26-weekly group sessions are required to complete the program.
- Reducing Our Assault Risk -- (ROAR) offers classroom presentations to middle, high school, and college students on dating violence and sexual assault prevention. Rape Aggression Defense (R.A.D.) is a self-defense training for women offered by a team of nationally certified staff and volunteers.
- Training and Education -- distribution of educational materials, in-service training for area professionals and volunteers, presentations to community, faith-based and civic organizations, and recognition of annual awareness months.
